The word 'weird' is . . . weird.
The grammatical rule for an e/i vowel combination in a word is (sing along if you know it):
"I before E, except after C, or sounded as A like 'neighbor' and 'weigh'."
"Weird" doesn't have an A-sounding vowel combo, and there ain't no C in that word, either!
