Sure the standard route is slightly longer and way cheaper, but the trains have that "frequently cleaned with upholstery disinfectant like a bus" smell . . . which is not altogether unpleasant, but not exactly pleasing, either. And yes, Sandy, the tracks are a bit rougher.
My vote is for the Acela Express . . . about $70 more per one-way, but the ride is as smooth as a baby's bottom and smells . . . well, it smells like nothing, I suppose. And massive leg room even in coach, which is important for those of us over 5 feet tall.
And the bathrooms (on the AE) are roomy.
Still, I AM paying less than $100 to get from Maine to DC one-way, so I guess it's all good. Still better than fighting the dang airlines. Fie on you, airlines!!!
