My Day Off

Tuesday, Nov 4

Okay, so it's been a little more than busy lately; think we've established that in a couple of earlier posts. Today I took the day 'off' . . . not that there isn't a ton of work to do at the office, but Pam called in a favor to have me watch the kids so she could go to class (grade schools were closed for elections) . . . so let me fill you in on not ONLY what WE did today, but also the REST OF THE STORY after they left. It was an awesome day that had its roots in the previous weeks:

Picture it, Winchester, October 23rd . . .

My neighbor lost a cat, wrote up some notifications and I happened to come home just as Good Samaritan was walking in with a cat matching the poster description. Not having met the original Lost Kitty, nor my neighbor being home to receive Found Kitty, I took in the cat, knowing that in a few hours my neighbor'd be home to get her. Turned out not to be her cat, so there I was, Good Samaritan #2, now responsible for Doing Something with this OTHER lost cat! LOL!!

Add to that the overall growning drama of politcal rallies, campaigns, plans for poll parties and generally making plans to watch the polls come in on election night . . . (it's been very exciting!). . .

And to that putting up "FOUND!" posters at local vets for the "new" cat, but having to wait to plaster the city with other posters until after Halloween (she's a black cat--bad people do bad things with lost black cats they claim as 'theirs' around Halloween), Halloween itself (and lack of a costume for both time and money--mostly time--I went as an environmental scientist . . . haha.), and the increasing politcal fervor that seemed to be everywhere this election, a quick posting of about 10 "FOUND!" kitty posters around the historic mall area last night . . .

And we now arrive squarely at today, November 4. Check this out--here's what I did today:
Got up (before the alarm!) at about 7am and puttered. Scoped out the 2009 IKEA catalogue for sofas because I was a putz and waited too long to buy My Perfect Sofa from Crate & Barrel this year. Kids arrived about 9am. First we headed down to the Unidentified Flying Objects store (a favorite), but they were not open yet, so we hopped next door to the Daily Grind for tres chic hot chocolates with whipped cream:

The kids and I don't often stay at my place for too long--Johnny has some evidence of pending cat allergies, plus my place is a little crowded with crap . . .also, cats. So to give everyone a break (including the cats, who are not interesting in playing AT ALL) I usually have some kind of game plan in mind for going somewhere or doing something. We ruled out going to DC museums, so instead we all drove over to CVS to harrass the pharmacists for my prescription, so they would, in turn, harrass my doctor to fax in approval for presciption renewal (I was traveling the last time I had it filled, so the expiry date was come and gone on the actual pill bottle from before), then we drove to the Polka Dot Pot, a paint your own pottery place. The kids had never been and completely LOVED IT, so of course we must plan on going back:

We worked on Xmas presents for "mom and dad".

Next, it was back to the pharmacy to find out that my doctor's office was too understaffed to handle a scrip confirmation in under 2 hours, so we drove over there to see what the hold up was (the doctor's office is, like, 5 buildings away--it's not like it was a big deal to see if there was a problem on my end--like a new prescription card because my company changed insurance . . . again), then we went for pizza at Vocelli's.

Johnny ordered a pepperoni/bacon with cheddar cheese, Kaitlyn ordered just cheddar cheese pizza--very 'open face grilled cheese' IMO. Very tasty; we each ate about 2 slices each just to top off the tummies. Yes, I will pay for it tomorrow.

Back to Unidentified Flying Objects, where we proceeded to completely annoy the poor store clerk by playing with a butt coin bank that farted whenever you inserted money (in the crack, of course). We also found some fun metal art:

Went back home to finish up the pizza and watch Indiana Jones (the first one) and when Pam got in Kaitlyn took a couple of photos. Mystery of the square fake smile solved! (Seriously, Pam, you're asking for trouble with school pix!! LOL!!) (Also, I REALLY need to start taking vitamins and making sure I have on some concealer when my face is all broken out. Bleh.)

After they left, I voted (in and out in 5 mins!!!), then went back to CVS, got my pills, spent too much money on hair products I'll use only on the weekend (maybe), went to Lowe's to buy a durable multipurpose task stapler for the rest of the 'FOUND!' posters, walked a two-block radius around the historic mall (where the cat was found) and posted flyers at every intersection. Had the foresight to take my camera with me and snapped a few photos en route. (The camera flash is wicked bright!!)

Got back home to a phone message from the cat's owner!! He was walking his dog and came to pick her up straight away--a mere 5 mins after I spoke with him, which was a mere 5 mins after getting in and hearing the message! Found Kitty went home, ran in to talk to my neighbor who had lost her cat (since found last week), then on the way back up to my place swung in to chat with Meg (another neighbor) and give a shout out for an Avon catalogue for my mom. Stayed about 3 hours gabbing and watched the poll results come in and heard both McCain's concession speech and Obama's victory speech.

Got back to my apartment at 12:30, took a bath, grabbed photos off the camera, wrote this up, and now heading to bed at appx 2:30am--likely working a 10-hour day tomorrow and prolly doing laundry sometime tomorrow night as well.

Crazy tired!!

Somewhere in there I should have grabbed some dinner I guess! :P
