DW Memories (day one)

Aug 10 2008 (Tommy's Birthday)

We spent most of the day driving from my aunt's house in NC down to Orlando, making pit stops at every state welcome center on the way to switch drivers, have a picnic lunch, compare restroom facilities, and nab a glass of complementary orange or grapefruit juice. The juice is only at the south-bound welcome center for Florida, but it IS a mandatory stop in this family--my aunt is all about the GF juice but mostly we all head there for a little extra AC (away from the car) and a free refreshingly cold beverage.

Finally got down to the hotel around 6 or 7pm, did our thing, and headed back out to Downtown Disney (the main shopping complex, which includes a Lego store) for some late dinner at the Rainforest Cafe. Daniel (my eldest cousin of the two at 11) is very into marine animals and Tommy is all about crocs/gators and amphibians so both of them really like to check out the merchandise and living tank displays while we're waiting. Seemed to take FOREVER to get in--I don't think we've ever waited so long to be called in, but we were there in the peak summer crowd and half starving, so maybe that was really the problem!

**Check out Richard Chu's photos of Downtown Disney, too! His pix are much better!**

Had a great dinner, still trying to figure out how to inexpensively reproduce the twinkling star ceiling with fiber optic cabling for my own place (someday!), and we ordered this chocolate brownie sundae thing for our appetizer since it was officially Tommy's birthday (which actually ocurred while we were in South Carolina he told everyone). A good time was had by all and it was an excellent way to get our feet wet for the week to come. . .

Happy Birthday, Tommy!!!
