It's a heady concept: write something (anything) and post it where anybody can view it. Slightly terrifying to place oneself out into the world so openly.
Anywho, I started thinking about blogging last year because I had increasingly less and less time to write individual emails and make phone calls at a decent hour on a regular basis. Weeks would go by (while I was traveling across the country or stuck in the office with reporting deadlines to meet) when I had little or no contact with the bulk of friends and family . . . when I did have time to catch up on emails or phone conversations I found myself writing/talking about the exact same thing repeatedly and I'd NOT get in touch with someone because I just couldn't stand the thought of rehashing the same subjects to a different person, regardless of how very much I wanted to contact him/her. Voice mail "tag" got old quickly for those folks that had schedules just as harried as mine.
So, I started this blog last summer with the intention of providing a place where friends and family could hop on (when they had time) to see what I've been up to lately, what's been on my mind. I never considered writing a blog that the general public would want to follow, so I don't concern myself too much about getting more readers (though who isn't a little taken with the idea that "self" could be interesting to so many?)--I only blog at this location as way to comment on my own life like so many post-its about my day/week/month left out on the kitchen counter for someone close to me to read. "I'm making cookies today! PS: Love you!"
I let myself be open and posted about subjects that I haven't ever really talked about before, or that are not worth a conversation but something that was on my mind . . . sometimes I'm just out here rambling or posting photos like pictures on the fridge. The end result is that some bonds have been strengthened, some have been severed, and some still need a phone call.
As far as keeping in touch with friends and family goes, blogging has proven to have it's ups and downs, but overall it's worked quite well--it's nice to have a phone conversation with someone I haven't physically spoken to in months and pick up with a subject like we'd just talked last week.
It's a good thing--think I'll keep it around for a while longer.
