Slightly Discouraged (the family blog fails)

Last summer, just after I started this blog for my own stuff, I got the idea to set up a family blog for my paternal relatives with the similar intent of creating a space where folks could keep in touch with what's going on in their lives, provide current contact information, news/photos, etc . . . the entire family moves at warp speed and it's a rare thing to catch someone at home for a phone call just to catch up. Even email is scarce. We drift apart quickly, each zooming along in our individual lives, and it gets harder to maintain a connection.

The idea of a family blog went over well with just about everyone, and I set it up here as a private blog to test the waters--if it worked then we'd move over to one of the more family-oriented subscription web sites like MyFamily.com.

It didn't work. It's been a full 5 months and there has been no follow-up interest outside of the initial "Yeah, that's a great idea!" So today I sent out the notice that the family blog will be terminated at the end of the month.

(sigh) I had hoped that it would work out, but the odds were stacked against: if one doesn't have time for email to a few, one probably won't have time for a blog for many. I'm consoling myself with the thought that the idea helped to reconnect some portions of the family outside of the blog itself, so in that respect the endeavor was a success. Still, it's hard to admit that even great ideas die.
