1st Annual Johnston Family Reunion

North Bend State Park, Johnston Family Reunion 2008Hello Family and Friends!

It took me a little while to get to this particular post--I didn't want to have it up without the supporting pix, and I had to jump through some hoops to get a third-party photo account set up and get everything sort of situated; html coding is weird. I'd like to have a slideshow feed in this post, but that is completely beyond me right now, plus some folks are still working on dialup service. Click the photo to view the album!

Surprise, surprise. My campsite was fairly near the park's amphitheater and I'd been told there was a bluegrass one-man musician entertaining that night. Not having anything better to do, I moseyed over, snapping photos as I went. Before I could even see faces of the audience I hear my dad's big mouth (booming voice: family trait) from somewhere in a far corner, so I knew I was assured a seat and went to say hello. The music was entertaining--the guy specialized in WV songs and folklore and played a different instrument with each song--think he had about 15 string/percussion/wind instruments, including something called a mountain dulcimer. We got rained out during the John Henry song, though. It was, as Forrest Gump said, "Big Ol' Fat Rain."

The next morning started slow--wasn't sure when the others were expected and I'd planned to hook up with dad and Marsha around 11ish so I could just take the morning on my own time. The weekend went very quickly, and to spare you the gorey details (plus, now you have incentive for showing up next year, Sloughs) here are the highlights:

  • My sister vandalized everyone's car
  • Goblin teeth and sparking toy guns
  • Mummy games (or, how to reuse old bed sheets before they get tossed)
  • Teryaki chicken!
  • The Disappointing Non-Exploding Trunk (have kids, will overpack)
  • Teaching the kids hopscotch
  • Teaching the kids hopscotch using a pictionary whiteboard for audience cues ("yay!", "laugh", "oh-no!")
  • Swimming (er, hunting) for crawfish

the kids also had great fun going back and playing in the creak and playing put-put. Tracy and I also took the kids on a LONG hike through the mountains which Johnny did awesome at and Kaitly was carried on Tracy's back on the up hills. That was fun! Maybe next time we'll be able to get more of the fam together. But if not...we'll still have fun anyway. Our family rocks!
